christmas-tree-1_green-021114-ykwv1Surprise your family and friends with one-of-a-kind gifts that you create in Studio 300. Here are some ideas:

  • Retouch an old family photo and share digital files or print on photo paper using our high-quality printer (you can even make a poster!)
  • Take a family portrait.
  • Find a pre-built model on Thingiverse and print it using our 3D printer (or create your own unique design and print that).
  • Record your family singing holiday songs or just a special message and then make a CD.
  • Convert that old VHS tape to DVD and share copies with others.
  • And more.

These all make heartfelt gifts and are easy and inexpensive. For more ideas and to get started on your project, stop by Studio 300 today.

Studio 300 September Programs

recycled-vinyl-record-crafts-1If you didn’t get a chance to take one of our programs during the summer, don’t worry. This fall we are holding a wide variety of digital media instructional programs. Many of our most popular programs are back, too.

To start, we recommend taking an Orientation which grants you access to all the equipment and rooms in the studio. Discover Studio 300 Macs and Software is another great hands-on program that highlights some of the software we have to offer and helps you get acquainted with Mac computers.

Here are additional programs:

On Tuesday, September 17th, transfer those old VHS tapes to DVD or skip the DVD and make it into a movie file that you can save to an external hard drive and view it on your iPad.  If you’re thinking of making family videos of your kids and their school shows or plays, Planning and Producing a Mini-Documentary on Monday, September 30th can help you organize your ideas and show you the proper way to record those special moments.

Thinking of recording something slightly more exciting than your children’s plays, like mountain climbing or wrestling a bear? Well, we have a really tiny camera here at Studio 300 that you can check out, mount on your head and record just about anything.  Go, GoPro, Go on Monday, 9/16 will show you how to use this camera and show you some cool videos shot with this tiny camera, too.

Of course it’s important and fun to edit your videos with titles, music and some fun effects.  Video Editing Made Easy on Thursday, September 19th and Wednesday, September 25th show you just that and then how to share it online using iMovie.

Summer at Studio 300

DSC00134Looking for something fun and exciting to do this summer? Studio 300 has many ways to keep you cool during those steamy summer days. Here’s a quick list:

  • Learn to play the guitar. You can checkout our electric (or bass) guitar and learn from a collection of how-to books or lessons in the GarageBand software. GarageBand even lets you follow along with a lesson and record it to track your progress.
  • Transfer your VHS tapes to DVD, LPs to CD (or MP3), and scan pictures (and slides) into the computer (to print and share). We have several digital archiving programs coming up that will show you how to do this. Check out our calendar to register for these and other Studio 300 programs.
  • Take the GoPro for a spin. This unique camera is perfect for catching the action of many summertime recreational activities. Read about it here.
  • Capture your memories. Learn how to shoot great video and pictures and post your work online for all your friends, family and co-workers to see.
  • Not going anywhere this summer? Check out our Green Screen Vacations instead.

This is only a sampling of the kinds of fun, rewarding digital media projects that you can create with the resources at Studio 300. Stop by or give us a call to discuss the possibilities. We hope to see you soon.

VHS Tape – Time is our Enemy

VHSDVDIf you’re like me, you probably have a pile of VHS tapes full of memories like your  baby’s first steps or that first wobbly bicycle ride down the sidewalk.   But the problem with VHS tape is time.  Time is the enemy.  Over time, tape begins to break down and sooner or later the video will be lost.  Depending on storage conditions, VHS tape can start to deteriorate in as little as 10 years.  First the color will start to fade, next tracking becomes difficult, and finally the tape will become brittle and break.  (Go here for everything you ever wanted to know about VHS tape.)  So gather your tapes, organize them by date, and start copying them to DVD before it’s too late.  It’s easy to do.  Studio 300 has all the necessary equipment to transfer VHS to DVD and we will show you how to do it!
